1st Issue!

Firehouse of God Ministries

Newsletter – Issue #1 - May 2007

Message from Pastor Brian………

Spring is upon us – the time of the rebirth of God’s creations. Now is the time we should be thinking about the rebirth of our Faith…. time to plant the seeds of Faith in others by witnessing our Faith to them and watching them grow and be saved!

Our Community Light Rescue Program is off the ground and running! We currently have four men and two women in residence. In order for the program to continue to grow, volunteers are always needed. See the Community Light Program section for contact names and phone numbers.

Please pray that God will continue to bless this program that we may help and direct those in need.

Bible verses to ponder this month:

1 Timothy 5:13 (New International Version)

Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought not to

Proverbs 26:20 (New International Version)

Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down

Monday Men’s Ministry

Another exciting (and growing) program here at the Firehouse! Men from various churches meet here in the church every Monday night. They take turns leading the discussion for the evening; it may be their personal witnessing or it could be a chapter or verse from the Bible that has great meaning for them or they may share trials and tribulations they have endured or goodness and blessings they have received from God. Whatever the topic, it is an evening of fellowship, sharing, and learning. The attendance has grown from 8 to 20!

Tuesday Women’s Ministry

On Tuesday, May 8th, we will begin something new in the Women’s Ministry. Mary Ann Stern, one of our Rescue Mission residents, will speak to us in the first half hour; she will be the first of several speakers we have lined up – people of different ages and different stages of their walk with Christ will share their life with us. In the 2nd half hour, Ruby will as always, lead us in devotion and prayer. We invite all you women to join us (and bring a friend if you wish).

May 15th – Danielle Lopez – May 22nd – Barb Morthland – May 29th – Veronica Disher

Sharing of personal information is considered confidential – please honor that.

Thursday Adult Discipleship

Currently reading 2nd Peter, 1st Chapter – there is much interaction between members of the group while discussing the reading. We bring the Word to life!

May 13th – Mother’s Day – last year we had a Mother’s Day breakfast, but we are unable to do it this year because of the repair work going on in the fellowship hall. However, this special Sunday has been designated Peanut Butter and Jelly Sunday! Bring a jar of peanut butter and/or jelly to church on Mother’s Day.

This will be the kick-off for the summer community “Let’s Feed Our Children Program”. Last year 21,057 sack lunches were given out to children who come to pre-designated places to pick them up! The program runs from June 5th through August 16th on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of each week.

This year Firehouse of God would like to become more active in the program and use the fire truck to deliver lunches to the children. We also will need volunteers (there’s that V word again!) to make the meals, pack the bags and serve them. What a powerful way to make our presence known in the community!

· Softball Practice – The church softball season is from May 29th through July 17th. Practice will be held every Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Sinnissippi Park. Games will be on Tuesday at either 6:00 p.m. or 7:15 p.m.

· Firehouse youth are going to the Crossroads Youth Center every Wednesday

· Kids Cadets is over for the summer season.

Please notify Barb Morthland if you have any events planned for June that you would like to see in the newsletter.

Make a Prayer Shawl!

What is a prayer shawl? – it is a knitted or crocheted shawl that is done by both women and men as a spiritual practice. A prayer is said as the shawl is begun and then many prayers are added with the stitches. Most of the time the recipient of the shawl is not known, but the recipient receives the message that many people have been praying for them and will continue to do so. Each shawl is a blend of prayers, talents, gifts and grace.

The shawls are done in a pattern of three, symbolizing the Holy Trinity. Finished shawls are two to three feet wide and six to seven feet long with the finishing fringe. The shawls are gifts freely given with no strings attached. They are not for sale – they are gifts of love.

Sometimes the persons making the shawls gather in a group while making the shawl – others prefer doing it on their own. You can use the following instructions or design your own!

3 skeins yarn – your choice of colors

size 11 or 13 needles

cast on 57 stitches

work in pattern of knit 3, purl 3 –always start with knit 3

always knit the purls and purl the knits to avoid ribbing pattern to appear

continue in knit 3, purl 3 pattern until shawl is 6 feet long

finish off with fringe (4-6” long) on both ends

3 or more skeins yarn – your choice of colors

size N hook

chain 54 stitches or your desired width

chain 1, turn, single crochet in each of the stitches to the end –chain 3 and turn

double crochet in top of each single crochet – repeating this row 2 more times –chain 1 and do 1 row of single crochet

repeat the pattern of 1 row of single crochet and 3 rows of double crochet until shawl measure 6 feet, ending with row of single crochet.

Finish with fringe (4-6” long) at each end.
